Treatment

song title: Spider and The Fly Genre: Funny Rap

Ideas/Concepts/Inspiration
The songs and artist that where my inspiration to go with this genre was ' Gimme some more' and 'Woo Haa' by Busta rhymes and 'Bonkers' by Dizzy Rascal. This is due to there crazy camera angles used to show the disorientated atmosphere in the scenes and have a surreal feel to them which i aim to accomplish with my work.

My idea that i spawned off these music videos is of a man dressed as a spider and a woman dressed as a fly. I have used my research that i have done on my target audience to choose the colours for the background for each character (Spider with webs in back ground , primarily purple and Fly with rotten food in the background primarily pink.) The hole music video will be biased on sexual innuendo's from the Spider to the Fly, these will be shown by both the lyrics and the visual working together therefor, following Goodwin's theory. finally i will need to create an animation to go in my music video because i would like to further my knowledge of how to create a animation as i am wanting to study it in university .

What I Will Need
In order to achieve my music video's full potential i will need to find two actors who aren't afraid to get into the character iv set them and rely sell the performance. In order to find these sort of people it would be in my best interests to start my search at the drama studio for some fresh talent. For the Meise-ene-scene i have chosen the drama studio due to me being able to manipulate the light in my shots also known as white balancing. i will create the actual background for each of my characters on a large canvas. I will also need to create or buy a Spider and Fly costume , or i could see if one of the DT teachers could help me out.

Challenges
The main challenge for me will be the animation segment of my video , this will be purely down to the fact that i have a lack of skills in this department at this moment in time having never actually made one myself. However, i will give it a good go and if all goes as planned i think it will be very effective. The background of my characters will also be quite time consuming but unlike the animation i have done similar topics before and am confident in my capabilities.

Justifications
i am going to try and follow Goodwin's theory in order to make my music video look professional.

Mood Board

the images on my mood board all give me inspiration and ideas for my music video due to them being in the same genre. Goodwin's theory is followed rather well in these music videos because what you see links in with what you hear, also the music video demonstrates the genre characteristics eg stage in metal video and bling in rap video. also due to the genre a good use of close ups of the artist has been used like in all music videos however the genre is shown by the use of distorted camera angles and shots. their is also a good use of intertextuality which also follows Goodwin's theory on what makes a music video.

Research Analysis

I created a poll for my music video to find out what people thought was best for my genre such as colour, costume and mese-ene-scene. I created it on Polljunkie.com and posted the link to it on my blog. The results i found have helped me to improve my video and make hard decisions.

The first Question I asked was ' would a funny rap video have animation on it?' i found that seventy five percent of consumers who took my blog said yes. This suggested to me that in order to create a good rap music video i must create a animation and include it in my video. In order to achieve this i must learn how to create animation on the computer. The next Question linked in with Goodwin's theory, the questionn read ' would the costumes of the artists match the songs lyrics?(a song about a bug, a man in a bug costume)'
One hundred percent of the consumers that took my poll said yes, this shows that Goodwin's theory has become an outline that people now expect in music videos. i will have to make two costumes one of a spider and one of a fly.

The third Question that i asked was 'what colour would you associate with a spider?' I found that most of my audience thought that the best colour for a fictional spider is a tie at 29% on the colours black , green and purple. I had no deffinat answer with the colour of my fly costume either with brown and black tied at 11% of my audiences vote. leaving green with 33% and blue with 44 % of the audiences vote , this result was due to the fact that blue and green are colours of two commonly known types of fly.I then asked my audience if there opinions would have changed had they known that the spider was manipulative and male and the fly was female and sweet. i found that the results then changed to purple for the spider and pink for the fly this shows that the cotume coluors i have chosen is interprited by my audience the way i wanted it to be .Finaly i asked what clothes would they have most asosciated with rap artist and 100% said Bling big puff jackets and bling this signified to me that stereotypes are a verry good route to take in the music video industry.

Idea for my music video "Spider and the fly"

I have listened to the lyrics of " Spider and the Fly" and i have noticed the repetition of the word 'Parlor'. the Spiders parlor could be anything from a shop he owns to his 'Crib' which then gave me the idea of making a insect version of 'Cribs' called 'Webs'. In this i could use camera angles and shots from the TV show 'Cribs' such as slow motion shots rewinding shots and low angled fish eye shots signifying a crazy atmosphere.

This idea links in with Goodwin's ideas because 'Cribs' is a TV show that already exists that commonly ventures around hip hop artists houses as they show off their wealth. This would be following his ideas by having a reference' to a programme that already exists and there fore, demonstrating the genre characteristics of my music video to my target audience, this is known as intertextuality.
the spider and fly costumes will develop the link between the music and the visual.
the use of shots of a TV with my artist in it will be a frequent reference to the notion of looking. and close ups of my 'fly' characters body will show particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

in order to achieve this i would need to create a spiders Crib instead of just one set. this would cost allot of money and take allot of time. However, if i did manage to pull this off this would be a great idea and be a great example of a synergy.

introduction to project

my chosen music piece

My chosen music piece is " The Spider And The Fly" which is a rap with a man playing the spider and a woman playing the fly. The rap artist i have chosen to advertise is called ' Master Disaster' or 'MD' for short . This works well because the 'Master' shows dominance where as the 'Disaster' shows violence a topic which most rap artists thrive on. It uses a play on its rhymes to make a link between the spider praying on the fly to men praying on women. Their playful banter (although its meant to be from a spiders an a flies point of view) keeps the audiences attention with the sexual play on words . For example, the spider mentions to the fly about resting on his bed and says he will 'snugly tuck you in ' the fly then replies that things that stay in his bed never wake and the spider gets very offended by this and makes accusations to the "ladybug" saying stuff about him. this is familiar to when a man gets a name for himself as a bit of a get around. a use of elongated words and a creepy sounding voice tells the audience that the spider is the bad guy. where as, the high pitched , very feminine voice of the fly tells use that she is the damsel in distress character with a twist . you find out that because she is to smart for the spider he cannot have his way. i think that because of the way that the two characters in the music are portrayed as opposites they should be shown as such on the video . For example, the spider is quite a dark character so he should be shown as such with a dark dingy miese-en-scene where as the fly should have a bright and beautiful miese-en-scene.

The genre of the piece is a form of tongue in cheek rap much like Bus ta Rhymes Woo Haaa ,due to this i am planning on having a series of wide angle shots, close-ups and strange angles in order to create a surreal atmosphere. The tune in the for ground is very upbeat and a good use of a synthesiser tells audience audience that the genre of this piece isn't a serious one. Due to this my video must have a fantasy feel to it. Due to this my target audience is 15-20 year old male teenagers , i chose this gap because due to the sexual intent of the lyrics it couldn't be heard by people under the age of 15. However, due to the immaturity people over the age of 20 will rarely find it entertaining.

What i will need to have in my video:
: there will need to be a contrast between the miese-en-scene of the spider to the fly(jux-to-position)
: there will need to be a use of costumes in my video (spider and fly costumes like Dizy Rascals shark costume on Bonkers)
: use of odd angled shots and different coloured shots to create a surreal feel in my video
: use of props (such as a bed) in order to follow Goodwin's theory.
: Good use of shot reverse shot ect to show conversation between spider character and fly character.

analysis of Forget You by Cee LO

Analysis of Forget You by Cee Lo

The music video that I have chosen to analyse is Forget You (or Fuck You) by Cee Lo. This music video uses synergy to tell a story. A synergy is when two or more types of media work together for one outcome. In this case the music and the video works together to tell the story of how much cee lo liked a girl he refers to as ‘The Heartbreaker’ and how he never got to be with her. In this analysis I will analyse the segment known as ‘Young Cee Lo Green’.

Setting

The setting in the whole music video doesn’t change, remaining the same as Cee Lo gets older and as the illustrations change in font, colour and imagery the setting remains constant. This signifies a loop in his life, a rut in which he cannot escape from until the end when he is famous then you see him cruse away from ‘The Heartbreaker’ in a convertible, shiny car and a suit. This signifies him moving on with his life at the end which is also what the whole song is about.

The setting itself is a 50’s styled diner called Cadillac Jack’s, its bright pink and blue colour scheme suits the era. Due to its fresh look the audience can see that it is meant to be set in this time period. The interior continues the exterior theme and its green walls link in with the Artist’s last name and also with the prop he uses in this sequence, a green garbage truck.

Props

Young Cee Lo Green’s garbage truck toy, compared to his love rivals red Ferrari toy, suggests to the audience that to ‘The Heartbreaker’ that he is the least appealing choice of the two. This follows the stereo type that women are only interested in money and power even at a young age; this is represented by the red Ferrari toy possessed by the love rival.

Costume

Cee Lo’s light brown knitted sweater on top of a white shirt signifies that he is quite poor at this moment in time in comparison to his love rival’s clothes, which is a suit and bow tie signifying money and again power. The three dancers that sing along with Cee Lo are in tight green dresses. This signifies that they are with Cee Lo Green because green is his last name but also it signifies money which signifies power.

‘The Heartbreaker’ is wearing a bright pink sweater this signifies her childlike status. It could also signify her link to the diner as the majority of both the diner and herself are bright pink.

Miese-en-scene

In the opening shot people are seen in the Miese-en-scene walking in and out of the diner, this signifies that it is a normal day for most people and also that it is a busy diner. A clock inside the diner has a red ring around it this could signify the time is a major part in this music video as you find out that it is. Cee lo’s parents are walking behind him in the diner you can tell this by the same coloured clothes as him signifying that they aren’t well off. You also get the impression that they are his parents by the way his mother reacts to him swearing in the song.

Camera shots

The sequence begins with a panning shot from the sky to a long shot of Cadillac Jacks’. This shot lasts for 14 seconds, in order to introduce the setting. We then get a head on tracking shot of Young Cee Lo as he sings to the audience. The camera is at his height, signifying that he is the main object of focus. This then continues on to a medium panning shot up to The Heartbreaker, suggesting a point of view shot of when he first laid eyes on The Heartbreaker. Following this is a pull focus shot of Young Cee Lo, his parents are blurred out. This signals that he is in his own world, daydreaming about The Heartbreaker. This pull focus shot is then from a point of view shot looking at The Heartbreaker looking at him and smiling, signifying a glimmer of hope for him. There is then a tracking shot of him standing up and walking over to her. We see this to build tension.

Editing

Each title is of a serif font, each with a different illustration, giving a small description of each of the characters, for example, Young Cee Lo Green’s title is san serif green font with a green garbage truck illustration, implying that this prop plays a major part in this scene, as does The Heartbreaker’s, which has serif pink font with a red Ferrari, signifying that she is all about the things a Ferrari denotes, such as money and power.

A good use of cut editing allows the audience to make the link between Young Cee Lo and Cee Lo narrating his own life by them singing the same song and cutting from one generation of Cee Lo Green to another. This signifies that they are the same person. In the miese-en-scene of Cee Lo narrating, the diner appears to be closed. This insinuates that what is happening in the video is past tense and has already occurred.
